Ear, Sweet Ear

Some birds build in trees. This one built in an ear. A red-billed oxpecker has woven a snug little nest of dry grass and stray feathers deep inside a white rhinoceros's hairy-rimmed ear, tucking in like it just signed a lease. The rhino, meanwhile, stares off with total indifference, apparently unbothered by the tenant. Equal parts absurd and oddly tender — a tiny bird claiming the least likely nesting spot on the savanna.
