The Tongue Trick

Even the rainforest can't decide if this is a flower or a bat. Hanging from a mossy branch deep in the understory, the black bat flower (Tacca chantrieri) spreads wing-like bracts and dangles a long, tongue-shaped bract below, whisker-thin filaments trailing from its sides. No wings, no fangs, no actual bat anywhere in sight — just a bloom that has perfected the impression of one, caught mid-hang like it's about to take off.
