This bloom moonlights as a sea creature. Native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, the rafflesia flower unfurls blood-red petals dusted with cream-colored warts, opening onto a ring of spiky, tentacle-like projections at its center. Photographed this close, the world's largest — and smelliest — flower stops looking botanical altogether, borrowing the texture of a sea anemone's oral disc and the color of a coral reef in low light.
