Eyes in Disguise

This pair keeps an eye out — literally, twice. A matched set of Purple-crowned Fairywrens turns plumage into punchline. Seen from behind, their violet rump patches sit under raised turquoise tails like a second set of eyes watching from below. Turn the pair around and the real eyes appear, small and black and fixed dead ahead — twice the birds, twice the eyes, and no telling at a glance which pair is actually looking at you.
