Flying Colors

This isn't a lepidopterist's cabinet — it's a fish market. Ten flying gurnards fan their oversized pectoral fins wide against black, each one patterned so differently it could pass for a separate species pinned in a specimen case. In truth every fish here is the same odd bottom-dweller, flaring its "wings" not to fly but to look twice its size to anything hungry nearby. Lined up together, the ocean starts doing its best impression of a butterfly collection.
