Pretty Poison

From above, it looks like a scrap of violet silk folded into a boat. From below, it looks like a storm. This Portuguese man o' war rides the surface on an inflated, crest-topped float, its violet and rose colours bleeding into the water like dye. But the sail is the least of it — beneath the waterline hangs a colony of stinging tentacles and feeding polyps, curling and drifting like something grown rather than born. Not one animal, thousands, wearing a single coat.
