That adorable penguin face is hiding a mouth built like a nightmare. An Adélie penguin opens wide for the camera, and instead of a harmless little beak there's a throat lined with rows of backward-curving spines, gripping teeth-that-aren't-teeth built for holding onto slippery fish. It's the kind of close-up that turns a beloved tuxedoed bird into something out of a deep-sea horror film, one uncomfortable inch at a time.
