Inner Space

This chick isn't crying for food — it's auditioning for a sci-fi film. Wide open and lit like a stage set, a downy finch chick's gape turns out to be one of nature's strangest inventions: a ring of glossy blue-green tubercles at the corners of the beak, black dot patterns on the palate, and a spiked orange throat, all built to guide a parent's beak straight to the target in a pitch-dark nest. Cute bird, alien mouth.
