Every jewel in this case used to have wings. Dozens of beetles are pinned in exacting rows across black velvet — hulking stag beetles with antler-like jaws, jewel-toned scarabs in polished emerald and sapphire, a slender dragonfly at rest among them, and one flower beetle caught mid-display with its wings thrown open in orange and green. Every carapace catches the light differently, turning an entomologist's drawer into a wall of tiny stained glass.
